How To Memorize Scripture: Tools and Tips

In this Article you will learn how Wisdom Builder helps you to understand and memorize scripture.  You will also learn additional things that you can do to help the memorization process.  Don’t worry, if you have a hard time remembering things, many people have that problem.  The good news is that if you put forth the effort, God will bless you!

With All Thy Getting, Get understanding (Proverbs 4:7b

It is easier to memorize what you understand!  The Wisdom Builder videos begin with a discussion of the memory verse for this reason.  Understanding God’s word is different than being able to quote it.  Understanding comes when we see things as God sees them.  It has nothing to do with your view or opinion.  As you begin to memorize scripture, you should:

·       Pray, ask God to help you to understand the passage

·       Read, think about what the passage means

·       Consider related or similar passages

As you meditate on the meaning of the passage, keep in mind that this is God's Word and what He wants us to know is paramount.  He has promised to show us the truth.  Remember that our opinions are clouded by life experiences, culture and other factors.

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice saying the verse or passage out loud.  The Wisdom Builder "Practice Track" has been designed for this purpose.  These tracks are located at the end of each video and separately as an audio track “Lesson” within the course.  Use this Practice Track to repeat the rehearsal process until you are comfortable reciting the passage without help.

Here is a way to test what you have memorized.  When giving thanks at each daily meal, try to quote the verse out loud.  Don’t forget to also say where the verse is found (e.g. Proverbs 29:18).  Of course, you can return to the Practice Track as often as necessary.

Write It Down!

You can write the verse down on a card or on sticky notes.  You can take the card with you and use it to practice. Sticky notes may be placed on mirrors, dressers, the refrigerator, etc.  Writing helps your memory and seeing the notes reminds you to practice!  You can also place the verse on the lock screen of your phone, tablet or computer.

The First Letter Technique

Practice writing the first letter of each word in the verse.  This causes you to focus on each word.  This technique will help your understanding and memory of the verse.

Try this using the verse below:

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 (NKJV)

A Blessing At The Right Time

Once you have successfully memorized a verse, you may find that within a week or two, you cannot recall the verse.  This is OK, and you are not alone.  It is important to know that when you need what you memorized, God will remind you of what is important about the verse and help you to apply it where needed!  Jesus taught His disciples for over three years and knew that the Holy Spirit would be available to help them when needed.  Consider these verses:

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. John 15:26;27 (NKJV)

And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, [a]or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy SpiritMark 13:10-11 (NKJV)

God will reward your effort!  When you need to recall the word or more importantly, the understanding of that word, the Helper will bring it to you.  After you have done the work, relax and trust God.
